Anna Sui is no longer just a New York-based American fashion designer whose clothes are being sold in over 50 countries, but the owner of an entire empire that includes her own fragrance, cosmetics and accessories lines.
The main reason I like Anna Sui is that she is never shy around color, her daring boho-chic creations are always feminine and playful at the same time.
Sui was born in Detroit but relocated to New York City in order to be able to study at the prestigious Parsons School of Design. She started by selling her designs at Macy’s department stores and Bloomingdale's.
Sui presented her first collection at New York’s fashion week in April 1991, at the encouragement of such pals as Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell who also modeled her clothes on the runway. This fact naturally helped launch the talented designer as part of the industry had already embraced her.
Now she owns several funky boutiques in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Osaka, that are a fashion statement all by themselves.
In 2009 Anna Sui won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (Council of Fashion Designers of America), for her contributions made to American fashion. Past recipients of this honor were Yves St Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Diane von Furstenberg.
Although there are some critics that call her a one trick pony, pointing out the sameness of her designs, calling them too whimsical and — design death — cute, it is the cuteness of these dresses that keeps women interested and loyal.
Sui mixes with enthusiasm different styles and has a great love for the hippie chic look (as do I :) ).
Her designs have been worn by the likes of Patricia Arquette, Christina Ricci, Cher, Naomi Campbell, Sofia Coppola, Courtney Love,
or Hayden Panettiere
Her are some steals from her spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection:
